How to motivate students?

With some students I find it useful to talk to them after class. "Why are you here?  What do you want to achieve?" We might then talk about how class is supposed to help them achieve those aims. Discussing their goals and how they plan to achieve them means that they have confidence that you have their best interests at heart.
